Entrepreneurship in the Philippines: 2016 Ecosystem Update — May 17, 2016

Christina Laskowski serves as a strategic advisor and management consultant to consumer and technology companies. Her background includes 16 years as a boutique investment and M&A banker where she helped raise more than $2.0 billion serving more than 100 clients; and three years in equity research as a member of the founding branded consumer research team at Hambrecht & Quist, one of the original premier boutique investment banks in San Francisco.  Currently, she also serves as President of STAC (Science & Technology Advisory Council) Silicon Valley, a 501(c)3 focused on driving economic growth in the Philippines and US through holistic entrepreneurship. After a fulfilling career in investment banking, Ms. Laskowski engaged the reigns full time and in 2009 transformed STAC SV to a strategic advisory organization with proprietary services.  She presented a five year strategic plan to the Philippine President in 2010 outlining steps to cultivate the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Her leadership was instrumental in creating a collaborative community of stakeholders resulting in a country wide movement to support tech entrepreneurs at the local level and the launch of the first three tech angel funds in the country in 2012.

Mario “Sanny” Leviste is the founder of Aguaterra Institute and Asia Media Resource. He is an Educator, Scientist, Artist, Multimedia Producer, Strategist, Innovator, Social Entrepreneur, Environmental Activist, MMA/FMA practitioner and foodie. He is also currently a consultant for the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Silicon Valley (FACCSV) and the Women Leading Change Now, and other public and private organizations and individuals. He had designed, developed and managed the Master in Management Technology program of De La Salle University Lipa in the Philippines. Mr. Leviste graduated with a degree of Master in Development Management (MDM) – as a scholar of the Asian Institute of Management.

Minette Navarrete is President at Kickstart Ventures, Globe Telecom’s wholly-owned corporate venture capital subsidiary. She is a member of the Ayala Corporation’s Innovation Advisory Council, and Globe’s Innovation Advisory Board, and is concurrently Vice-Chairman of Yondu, Globe’s technology solutions company.  In Globe: Ms. Navarrete joined in July 2006 to start Business Development in what was then a pure-play mobile operator: under her leadership, the team created Globe’s first digital strategy blueprint and put in place the foundation of Globe’s digital media, content, and mobile advertising businesses.  In 2012, she led her team to found Kickstart Ventures, Inc. and spin it out as a wholly-owned Globe subsidiary. Kickstart is an investment firm that funds early-stage digital startups, providing capital, incubation and mentoring, and market access. Kickstart is the Philippines’ most active early-stage investor; its portfolio has some of the country’s best-performing startups; its mentorship program is highly coveted. Kickstart portfolio companies have attracted funding from some of the world’s most respected tech investors: Y-Combinator and 500 Startups from Silicon Valley; Omidyar Network from New York; IMJ Investment Partnersfrom Japan; and Wavemaker Labs from Singapore.

Christopher Peralta, Founder and CEO of Manila Valley, has more than 15 years experience in the Mobile and Technology sector, now Founder/CEO of Manila Valley, an Accelerator program in Silicon Valley focused on Filipino startups in Philippines. Today, Chris already supports and advises Filipino startups and companies, is spearheading a mentorship program with Philippine Universities overall being the bridge between Philippines and Silicon Valley.  Mr. Peralta is an entrepreneur with multiple startups, is an Investor, Advisor to more than 10 portfolio companies in Silicon Valley in various industries. His understanding of both domestic Philippine market and Silicon Valley, awareness of new technology trends and extensive business network allows him to execute with ease.  Building strategic relationships is his forte and Mr. Peralta has managed and executed deals with Telcos from SingTel Group in Asia to T- Mobile in USA, unicorn companies in Silicon Valley from Dropbox to Flipboard, strategic deals with Tech companies like Amazon to Facebook and Enterprise Sales deals from Cisco to Nokia.

Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) Marketing & Communications Director

Erin is a UX and front-end developer consultant possessing years of experience as a digital marketing and communications consultant. In 2014, her team won DataHack14 for a B2B mobile advertising platform to subsidize the cost of international calls via display ads. As a proud Silicon Valley native born and raised, she worked as an early hire serving as sole finance staff for the Congressional race to elect former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Ro Khanna in California Congressional District 17, the heart of Silicon Valley. Additionally, Erin has contributed as a prolific content strategist and journalist, publishing to publications such as Philippine News, Change.org, and Hyphen magazine for over 6 years. She is a proud participant of the inaugural 2011 New Leaders Council – Silicon Valley fellowship class, a political entrepreneur training program. From 2008-2012, Erin previously served in digital strategy roles to increase civic engagement of Filipino and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities as former National Communications Director for KAYA: Filipino Americans for Progress and Board Member for Asian Pacific Americans for Progress. Erin is a proud UC Berkeley alumnus.


Vivian is a multi-awarded broadcast journalist and free-lance print reporter. She writes for the North America bureau of INQUIRER.net, the most widely read online source of news about the Philippines. After winning television’s highest honor, the Emmy, Vivian changed course and joined the nonprofit sector. She is currently the executive director of West Bay Pilipino Multi Service Center that helps low-income immigrant families in San Francisco. She’s been named by the Filipina Women’s Network as one of the most influential Filipina women in America.


Marc was born in Manila, Philippines and grew up in Makati City. He is an electrical engineer who lives and works in Silicon Valley. He received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, in the same field, from Stanford University. Dr. Loinaz was a member of the research staff at Bell Laboratories where he led a team that demonstrated the world’s first single- chip color digital video camera in 1997. In 2001 he co-founded Aeluros Inc., a semiconductor company that pioneered 10-Gb/s serial communication chips that are now widely used in cloud computing facilities. Aeluros was acquired by NetLogic Microsystems in 2007, and Dr. Loinaz was as a key member of NetLogic’s technical team during five years of explosive grown in NetLogic’s networking chip business. In 2012 NetLogic was acquired by Broadcom Corporation where Dr. Loinaz currently serves as Director of Engineering. He has received multiple awards over the years, including the 1998 Best Paper Award from the IEEE Journal of Solid State Circuits, a 1999 Award for Technological Innovation from Discover Magazine, and a 2000 Distinguished Technical Staff Award from Bell Laboratories.

Victor Oliveros is a serial entrepreneur and is currently the CEO of Tiptop Health. He and his team won the Salesforce $1 Million Dollar Hackathon by re-creating Healthcare.gov. He has a background in computer engineering and immigrated to the Bay Area from the Philippines at age 15.

Tisa Mendoza worked 12 years for high-tech corporations in Silicon Valley before transitioning to lifestyle coaching. Her coaching and public speaking work gained her the reputation as a “Healthy Living Motivator” and was the catalyst for her to produce a weekly radio show, television segments (aired on KRON4-TV in San Francisco), and media-rich web content. Tisa’s company, Buzzledom, will be releasing a community-based sustainable crowd sourcing web app that allows its users to collect all their faves, connect with others, and contribute in positive ways to their community. Tisa has triumphed over eating disorders, low body-image and self-esteem, high school bullying, and domestic violence. It is what fuels her passion and dedication to serve her community. She was a board member of Challenge Day and has served as Advisory Board member for Schools for Humanity and The Body Positive, has given after school talks for at-risk youth, taught healthy living workshops at Lyon Martin San Francisco to HIV-positive women overcoming substance abuse, volunteered for CORA (Communities Overcoming Relationship Abuse), and is a trained hotline counselor for SFWAR (San Francisco Women Against Rape). She taught her Body Wisdom workshops for the Smart Girls Program for the Boys and Girls Club, and also volunteered as a weekly guest expert for the East Palo Alto after school programs. Tisa lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, is mother to a 14-year old son, and adopted canine, Lizzie the Butterscotch.

Rene Buhay brings to American Science Products (ASP) over 25 years of outstanding track record in achieving hundreds of millions in sales with multiple companies via his global channel representing over 80,000 retail storefronts worldwide. Prior to ASP, he was SVP of JK Imaging/Kodak where he managed sales for the Americas, South Asia and Middle East/Africa. Prior to Kodak, he was President of RedDot Imaging/Agfaphoto where he expanded distribution to 30 countries within 12  months. Prior to RedDot, he was SVP at General Imaging/ GE wherein he grew the business from $0-$150 Million in 18 months. Over the years, he has held senior management positions at Ricoh, Samsung and ArcSoft. Mr. Buhayholds an Executive MBA from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business & BA in Economics from Ateneo de Davao University. In addition, he has completed several executive education programs at USC’s Marshall School of Business, Northwestern  University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and University of Pennsylvania’s The Wharton School.

Christina serves as a strategic advisor and management consultant to consumer and technology growth companies, business leaders and government organizations. Ms. Laskowski has extensive business development, operations management, and strategic execution experience. Her career includes 16 years as an investment and M&A banker at ValuQuest International, FBR Capital Markets, East Peak Advisors and Pacific Growth Equities; and three years in equity research at Hambrecht & Quist. She has served more than 60 clients helping to raise in excess of $2.0 billion.

Ms. Laskowski is also President of STAC Silicon Valley, a non-profit organization that serves as an advisor to government and business leaders, community and grassroots organizations, and educational institutions in the Philippines and US. In 2009, following the execution of an MOA with the Philippine government, STAC SV presented the strategic plan to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Philippines. STAC SV set the groundwork in 2010. In 2011, it developed the ON3 Acceleration program which served as the initial funding platform for emerging growth companies generating international funding for 5 companies in 18 months. Inspired by STAC’s ON3 program SMART, Globe and Novare, the corporate sponsors of ON3, launched the first angel funds in the country in 2012. Christina serves as an advisor to a number of start-ups, is an advisory board member of USF’s entrepreneurial program, and a mentor with FT Accelerator (Fashion Technology) in Silicon Valley. She is a community member of ASTIA and contributor to TheFunded.com. She has also served as an M&A consultant to Plug and Play Tech Center. In 2010, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo presented Christina with the Golden Heart Award, Rank of Grand Officer. The same year she served as a Balik Scientist (return Scientist) awardee of the Philippine Department of Science & Technology. In 2011, Filipina Women’s Network recognized her as one of the “100 Most Influential Filipinas” in the United States.
